Why You Need To Drink More Water

Weight loss, Water

If you’ve come to the decision to dedicate some valuable time to yourself and make some long awaited changes to your health and lifestyle, you’ve come to the right place. At the DVCC, we don’t just teach you effective ways of burning fat through proven methods, such as cardio and interval training; we advocate a healthier lifestyle as well.

Getting fit isn’t only about looking better on the outside by losing weight and building muscle tone; it’s about feeling better on the inside by following a healthier diet, cutting down on those high sugar foods you don’t need, and drinking plenty of water.

While most people are aware that drinking liquids is good for them, many don’t realise that not all fluids are beneficial to their health. Diuretics, such as coffee and alcohol, cause you to urinate more frequently and can leave you feeling dehydrated.

Fizzy drinks, such as cola, contain around 140 calories a can and many juice cartons are packed with sugar as well. Instead of doing yourself a favour, you can actually harm your fitness regime by not being mindful of your fluid intake.

Here’s the brilliant thing about water – it’s free, has absolutely no calories in it and can actually help your body burn fat. And if that wasn’t enough, check out the top five reasons why you should reach for the bottle now:

  1. A balanced body – Your body is made up of approximately 60% water, essential for all your bodily functions, such as digestion, circulation, the production of sweat and saliva and maintaining your body temperature. Drinking plenty of water ensures that your body functions correctly and your vital organs, such as your kidneys, stay healthy.
  2. Calorie control – Ok, so it’s not a magical weight loss solution, but substituting that glass of wine, pint of lager or sweet drink for a glass of water will not only make you feel virtuous for saving on calories, but it can also leave you feeling fuller and lessen your need for extra food intake.
  3. Healthier looking skin – Water keeps things flowing in your body, including certain toxins that can result in clogged pores and acne. Drinking lots of water helps to flush these out of your system and can reduce the risk of spots and puffy eyes.
  4. Avoid muscle fatigue – If you aren’t drinking enough water, then your muscle cells aren’t getting adequate fluids, which means their performance can suffer. While working out at the DVCC centre, it’s essential that you drink enough water to ensure that your muscles don’t get tired and you can get that extra round of sprints in.
  5. Wake up call – Can’t live without your daily cup of coffee to get you going in the morning? Actually, one of the most common symptoms of dehydration is tiredness. Keeping your body properly hydrated at all times can help you beat fatigue and fight the need for caffeine.

Whilst the amount of water needed for every body type is different, you should be aiming for at least one to two litres a day, more when you are exercising. Try starting your day off with a glass of water and keeping a bottle at hand. Every drop counts.
