Mark: Hi! This is Mark and Stephen from TheDVCC.com, The place to be if you want to lose weight and tone up. So, we’ve got another question. We’re getting them thick and fast. And this is from Joanne, and she asks, “I’m getting engaged. I want to know what my target weight is and how to get to my target weight in time for my wedding day.”

So, Joanne, first things first. I think it’s important that you don’t think about weight necessarily. Think about body fat.So, I use this as an example a fair bit. You could be the 11 stone lady at 20% body fat or an 11 stone lady at 30% body fat and the 20% lady is going to look 10 times more athletic and more healthy than the lady at a 30% body fat. And both of them weigh 11 stone so you would think that perhaps they’d look very similar. But, body fat is really what matters and what counts in terms of how you’re going to look in your dress, how you’re going to feel on your honeymoon. And also, how healthy you’re going to be. So that’s the first thing. You want to check that you’re focusing on body fat more than actual weight.

And then, you also want to realize that if you’re getting married and you save it up to the last minute to start losing weight, you’re going to crash diet to get there. And actually, what can happen is you’re going to lose just as much muscle as you do fat when you do that. And actually, your body fat is going to go up. So, I mean, if you lost 2 stone in a month, you’re going to lose a large amount of muscle, and actually, your body fat is going to be higher.

Stephen:  So, for example, you have a dress that shows off any sort of skin – say your arms are showing or what have you – if you’ve lost muscle, you’ll find that your arms aren’t as toned. They don’t look as sleek as if you were focusing mainly on body fat rather than just the weight.

Mark:  Now Joanne says she’s got about 9 months until she gets married, and that’s a very good time. I say, basically, you want to be starting about 6 months plus out. The longer you can start in advance, the better, to be honest.

Stephen:  Well, because being healthy and being lean obviously should be a lifelong thing anyway.

Mark:  Exactly. So, basically, as I’ve said to Joanne in my response – I wrote my response to her, but then I thought actually, it’s good to make a video out of it – that she’s got 9 months. She wants to start now. We can create the habits with her at Bedford Centre or Milton Keynes Centre, and all our personal trainers, we’ve had loads of experience with helping brides-to-be.

Stephen:  I mean, Heidi just got married and she looked amazing. Didn’t she look amazing?

Mark:  She did look very good. I saw the photos last night. And she’s going to be sending them through so we’ll be able to put them up for you to see. But, I mean, she started well in advance, to be fair.

Stephen:  She did, yes.

Mark:  And so, it’s a lot better. You’re going to look a lot better on your wedding day if you do it gradually, but you’ll increase your muscle tone and you’ll lose your body fat.

Stephen:  And you’ll actually feel a lot better on the day as well because I think I know a lot of people who tend to crash diet like Mark says. And by the time their wedding comes, they’re feeling really low on energy and they’re actually feeling pretty grouchy. So, you want to be energized when you actually have to go through all the stress of organizing a wedding anyway.
