Today we have a question from Donna, who asks, “Can I eat protein bread?”

Great question Donna, thank you for asking.

Over the last couple of years, the supplement market has picked up on a few areas which they have felt they could capitalise on, and one of these areas is healthy, unhealthy food.

whey-protein-bread_4504_wm-1So, by taking foods which are typically not the best for optimal health, such as bread and pasta, and adding some protein into the mix, they have been able to market their products to people who watch their nutrition carefully.

This makes their products more tempting to a select group of people which were very hard to market and sell bread to previously.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t actually make the product more healthy – it just makes it higher in protein. The wheat, yeast, sugar and salt will still remain in the bread and will have the same effects on your fat loss results.

Now remember, companies are very good at advertising and marketing and they will use words such as classic or traditional on their packaging; the reason they do so is because people make the connection between their parents eating traditional food, or food that was traditionally eaten by athletes, for example.

Also be aware of the words, ‘gluten free.’ Gluten free food is very good, don’t get me wrong; however, I saw gluten free cherry bakewells in Starbucks recently; don’t fall victim to clever marketing and think that because it’s gluten free, it’s not as bad – cherry bakewells are still not healthy!

For the best muscle tone and fat loss results, try and stick to unprocessed and natural food sources, as most of these will be gluten free anyway.

This is Nathan from the DVCC; have a healthy day.
