MENOPAUSE

Most women will at some stage suffer through the effects of the menopause. Amongst the most common impacts the menopause can have is weight gain.

This weight gain is found mostly around the central area of the body. This is caused by the fact that with menopause often comes insulin resistance. This means that your carbohydrate tolerance becomes less, which means that eating the same foods that you used to eat before the menopause, could potentially cause you to gain weight.

Apart from weight gain caused by a lower carbohydrate tolerance, other symptoms of the menopause can be a lowering of bone density. Dr’s will often warn you about the risks of osteoporosis or ostopeonia.

This means that your bones are becoming thinner and are at risk of becoming too thin. Complications of osteoporosis or osteopeonia include bone fractures, particularly of the spine or hip. In the worst cases the bones that make up your spine (vertebrae) can weaken to the point that they may crumple, which can result in back pain, lost height and a hunched forward posture.

EXERCISE AND NUTRITION AS A TREATMENT FOR MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS

There are a large number of possible treatments for the menopause, some of them natural whilst others such as Hormone Replacement Therapy focus more on offsetting low hormone levels in the body with Dr prescribed drugs.

Amanda_Banks.pngOne of the most proven natural ways to treat the symptoms of menopause is getting your body fat into a healthy range and not allowing it to yo-yo. To achieve this you need to take into consideration the affects the menopause has on your body. Eg By dealing with the decreased insulin sensitivity and increased risk of osteoporosis.

The best course of natural prevention for osteoporosis is to do 3-4 resistance sessions a week. These will not only help to improve your bone density but resistance training has also been shown to increase your muscle tone which not only has a positive impact on weight loss/fat loss but also increases the strength of your joints further protecting against the dangers of thinning bones.

A further benefit of resistance training is that it increases your insulin sensitivity in a much more effective manner than any other type of exercise. Particularly when compared to long steady state cardio style of exercise such as jogging or swimming.

Nutrition also plays a pivitol role in preventing any of the side effects associated with menopause. Incorporating green leafy vegetables and nuts and seeds will not only help you lose weight but will also provide you with optimal sources of bone building calcium.
