Should I Be Having Greens Drinks?

Health, Supplements

Its the new craze sweeping the nation, having flown across the pond from America. You will have seen the glossy magazines full of celebrities floating along carrying a dubious coloured drink proclaiming that this drink is the next big fat loss beverage!

But what ARE "greens drinks"?

Vegetable drinks have been around for donkies years, but of course when a celebrity tweets about them they become a lot more famous!

Put simply "greens drinks" are a mashed up mixture of green leafy vegetables, with some healthy fat and low GI fruit thrown in if you are being adventurous.

We have in fact been suggesting our clients make them at all 3 of our studios (Bedford, Milton Keynes and soon to be Northampton).

But what are green leafy vegetables...And healthy fats....and low GI fruit?

Leafy Vegetables

Simply put are leafy green vegetables. Its the fibre that makes a real difference and will help you detoxify and lose weight

Vegetables like:

  • Curly Kale
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Cabbage

Healthy Fats

These are the fats you NEED. As we all know not all fats are equal...You do know that right? Well you do now and as such we need to make sure you get the right ones. Here they are:

  • Avocado
  • Pecans
  • Almonds
  • Cashews
  • Olive Oil
  • Coconut Oil

Low GI Fruit

These fruits are the tastiest out of all of these ingredients, but as is normal if it tastes too good it usually is! Even though these fruits are "low GI" (basically meaning your body takes a while to break them down to be used as fuel - a good thing).

These fruits include the following:

  • Blueberries
  • Raspberries
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Strawberries

How To Make A Greens Drink

Now you know what goes into them, how do you make a tasty greens drink?

First things first you need a cold pressing juicing machine...Or failing that simply get a cheap juicer. Once you get into them more and find they become a regular staple then its time to invest in a Vitamix. Its all about the oxidising of the vegetables you see!

Personally we think you should only worry about that once you have managed to work the act of making your own juices into your schedule.

The three things you need to remember when making your juice drink are:

  1. Always have a fibrous vegetable as your staple (spinach is always a winner)
  2. Use coconut water OR include a "good fat" such as avocado
  3. Only use enough low GI fruit for taste

An easy and lovely recipe that I enjoy is:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 Cup Spinach
  • Ice
  • Lemon Juice
