What Types Of Fat Should I Be Eating?

Fat, Weight loss

Natural fats are good for you, your body loves them and they will help you to lose fat.

Phew there it is I said it!

natural-Healthy-FatsIt's easy to overeat some types of natural fats. I have overeaten almonds many times in my lifetime.
As I'm sure many of you reading this article may have done?! (We can all be forgiven...They are lovely!!)

The first thing you want to do is make sure that you are eating the RIGHT kinds of fats. There are a lot of different types of fat which have different effects on the body.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fats that the body cannot synthesise and they cannot be stored by the body when we consume them through foods we eat throughout the day.

The EFAs come from the omega 3 fats found in fish and some meats and also the omega 6 fats found in seeds and nuts.

Consuming a higher amount of EFAs has been shown to lower inflammation, which is very important for overall health and well being. There has been research which shows that EFAs help to increase insulin sensitivity and increases metabolism.

The effects of a higher metabolism is increased calorie burn and energy expenditure.

So get those EFAs into your diet and start burning more calories :)

Avacados, nuts, olives and extra virgin olive oil all have great fat loss properties. These fats contain many vitamins and minerals and are rich in fibre. These fats also contain no omega 6 fats (which is a GOOD thing).

Omega 6 is not a bad fat to consume by any means, it should just be consumed at a ratio of 4:1 (4 parts being omega 3 fats) the western diet is high in foods and oils which have high amounts of omega 6 in comparison to omega 3.

Processed foods contain high amounts of omega 6, so try to reduce them as much as possible to reduce the amount of omega 6 within your diet.

extra_virgin_olive_oilExtra virgin olive oil is a great fat and something I use very frequently in my every day food.

I used to cook with it....

...That was until I found out that when you cook with olive oil it changes from a very good fat to a horrible one!

Olive oil has a very low smoke point. Which means that the oil becomes toxic when heated. Olive oils and other types of vegetable oils become damaged when heated.

The fat becomes oxidised and should never be consumed as it can damage your cells and your DNA. This increases the risk of disease.

A much better and safer oil to cook with is coconut oil. This has a much higher smoke point and will not cause your body harm when heated.

Try to resist eating high carb foods with your natural fats

When I say olive oil, do you say pasta?

When I say butter, would toast spring to mind?

More often than not good fats can be paired with high carb choices. Eating high carb and high fat foods together is a recipe for disaster as it elevates triglicerides, which means you will have a unhealthy amount of fat in the blood.

Having a high amount of triglicerides in your blood stream will increase the risk of developing heart disease.

Try dumping the carbs and opting for a meal which revolves around protein, natural fats and vegetables.

You will absorb more nutrients from vegetables when they are paired with good types of fat as well.
