The Heavyweight Fight – Sugar vs Fat

Fat, Health, Fitness, Sugar

In the red corner we have Rocky-Road Balboa; he’s sweet as SUGAR with an energetic punch.

And in the blue corner we have the heavyweight champion of the world; FAT.

So who is our winner in this heavyweight fight?

You may have watched Horizon’s fascinating documentary ‘Sugar v Fat’ recently which set out to answer one of the hottest questions in nutrition, which is worse for us: sugar or fat?

fat_vs_sugar_image Without doubt you will also have heard in the media many discussions on these two hard hitters.

In the programme two doctors Chris and Xand Van Tulleken went on a month long diet. One took the high fat regime and the other the high sugar to discover the truth.

The basic premise to the show is that they are identicaltwins, like us, meaning that they have identical DNA, naturally making it a pretty close fight.

Ironically there didn’t seem to be a definite winner and there were some flaws in the experiments and interpretation of the data but the programme did conclude that the two combined together which we know as processed foods were very damaging.

Frankly the stats out there are shocking; currently 25 percent of adults are obese and alarmingly this is expected to rise significantly to 60 percent of men and 50 percent of women by 2050. Naturally the programme left a few questions unanswered for some but did create yet more interest in these fascinating areas. At DVCC we dig deeper in our fight to help you.

So let’s take on our first opponent; FAT. Is it the good the bad or the ugly? Historically this has been known as the bad guy but like all good films sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem at first glance. Some fats are not just extremely good for us but actually essential to our health. For some it comes as a surprise when they are told that eating fat (the right sorts) can actually help with being lean, it has also proved abundantly beneficial in reducing the risk of conditions such as cancer and osteoporosis. We can help you find the heroes (which also taste great) in amongst the villains with our personalised nutrition plans.

So what about sweet sweet SUGAR? Not so sweet after all perhaps. In fact sugar can negatively impact the function of the body and has even been compared to ‘crack cocaine in a cute costume’. Our bodies do need limited carbohydrates but we can get these from numerous other foods which are far more nutritional. Eliminating the sweet stuff can help you get lean and help prevent a huge amount of problems such as diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and accelerated aging as sugar tends to make us fat, degrading our general health. Sugar has the ability to alter brain function and as a result we tend to eat more and more. We can help you understand where this troublemaker lurks and introduce you to other food alternatives that are not only good for you but taste delicious!

At DVCC we help you knockout the villains of nutrition with great guidance and support and also equip you with where to find the true heroes to achieve your goals.
