Should You Be Using Protein Shakes?

We get a lot of people ask us if protein shakes are an essential part of seeing results and living a healthy lifestyle, or if they NEED to have protein shakes as a part of their day.

In short…Yes and no!

Whilst it would be easy to say that everyone should be using protein shakes in order to build muscle, or to help your recovery. But that wouldn’t be entirely true...so we thought we'd give you a bit more insight into WHY protein shakes might be a beneficial thing to add to your day to day and how you can utilise your protein intake to your advantage!

WHY DO I NEED PROTEIN?

Let's start with a little background. A lot of people are actually unsure of what protein actually is and what it does for our bodies. In short, protein is a key macronutrient that plays a part in almost EVERY part of your body. Everything from your skin, hair, nails and even your DNA. These are all made up on intricate strings of proteins.

Pro
Most of us are actually deficient in protein, meaning that for many people, they are rarely ingesting the adequate amount of protein in each meal.

A good way to measure this would be to use your hand! In ever meal you eat, you should be aiming for around 1 palm sized portion of protein if you are a woman, and 2 palm sized portions in every meal if you are a man.

…We’ll let that sink in, do you get between 3-6 portions of protein in your day?

It’s more than most people think!

WHERE CAN I FIND PROTEINS?

The only way for humans to increase our protein intake is to ingest it from external sources. So if you are struggling to reach those portion sizes above, there are a few great food sources which can help you. Mostly these are lean meats such as chicken, turkey, fish and most other non processed, non-red meats.
However there are still a large number of other protein sources out there (especially for vegetarians!) These include: Eggs, seeds, beans, legumes and nuts!

HOW CAN PROTEIN SHAKES HELP?

As mentioned, a lot of us do struggle to get adequate sources of protein each day. So supplementing protein via protein shakes can be a great idea.

This is especially true after a great training session as ingesting protein after a session will not only help keep you feeling fuller, but also will help aid your recovery by helping your body rebuild muscle tissue and repair itself.

There are A LOT of different type of protein out there, but the easiest way to avoid the marketing jargon and advertising tricks is to just use Whey Protein. This is a very pure source of protein that contains far fewer additives than many other sources out there.

Likewise, for vegetarians/vegans, you can also find many vegan whey protein powders out there.

Mix 1 scoop of your protein powder with a scoop of water, milk or almond milk and you’re good to go!

Give protein a try, you might just feel it work wonders!
