Is Your Work Life Balance Not Working?

Case Study, Nutrition, Weight loss, Transformations

Josh: Hi, this is Josh from the DVCC and I’m here with a DVCC Bedford client, Lisa Huckle, who has *lost over 20lbs of fat since joining the DVCC in May 2014.  I’d just like to chat to Lisa quickly about how her *life is different now as to before she joined the DVCC.

LisahuckleSo Lisa, could you tell me a little bit about a typical day in the *life of Huckle, before the DVCC?

Lisa: Before DVCC I didn’t really exercise, my diet was terrible; I was quite a big drinker as well, which I don’t think helped. I didn’t sleep particularly well and was a massive chocoholic, I love chocolate. I started a new job about a year ago as well, and they have a Costa Coffee; I got into the routine of having a latte and a cake every day as well. So I slowly started to put weight on. So basically pretty rubbish before I started at the DVCC.

Josh: Was there anything that was a real trigger for you that made you want to say, “I’m going to do something about it now”?

Lisa: Yes, I did some decorating at home and I know it sounds really stupid but I was taking some wallpaper off the walls and I could not move for about three days afterwards. I just thought I needed to get fit, I needed to get in shape. None of my clothes fit me very well, I hated shopping, hated what I looked like and so I just thought it was time to do something about it. That’s why I looked into the DVCC.

Josh: Ok. I know it’s a little bit of a while ago now, but do you remember how you felt at first initially, when coming to DVCC; was it a tough thing to change?

Lisa: It was tough, yes, especially trying to fit it in around work. When I first started, I worked round the corner so it wasn’t so bad. I used to come in the mornings, which was a massive thing for me because I’ve never been a morning person. I used to come at 6am before work; as soon as I started doing that, I just got into a routine and felt a million times better for it.

I thought if I can get up at 6 o’clock in the morning to come training, anybody can do it.

Josh: Good. So talk to me a little bit, before we get into the nitty gritty about your work *life and things like that, what does your day look like now, how does it differ?

Lisa: Now I work up in Solihull, so it’s a three hour round trip commute. I get up at 5 o’clock in the morning, leave at 6 and typically get into the office about half past seven. I do a full day at work and then drive near enough an hour and a half back, straight to the DVCC, training. Yes it’s tough but I make it work because I love coming and it’s made me feel a million times better. I’ve *lost loads of weight, I feel better about myself, I sleep better, I’m eating better and I don’t really drink as much any more. I’m just a lot healthier, basically, and a lot better for it.

Josh: Good. I know that it’s a tough thing and a lot of people might be listening and thinking that they have a long commute as well; maybe they have thought in the past that they can’t fit it in. So how do you plan your day to allow you to train on top of your long day?

Lisa: You just have to fit it in. If you want to do it, you will make time for it. So I generally try and get into the office a little bit earlier, so I can leave on time and make the 6.45 sessions. I generally pack my stuff at work and head straight here, just allow a little bit of time to get here; just prepare yourself for the day.

Josh: So a little bit of planning goes a long way?

Lisa: Yes. And breakfast and stuff, because it’s quite early I just have one of the DVCC shakes whilst I’m on the go, so I drink it whilst I’m in the car, then have a little bit more breakfast when I get to work. So, yes, it’s just about planning really, scheduling in my days for the week and then I have my socialising days as well.

New Call-to-action

Josh: So you’re a bit of a planner then?

Lisa: Yes, a bit of a planner. It’s all about planning.

Josh: I like that. It is all about planning, I’m a planner myself. So what kind of things do you plan, how does it help you?

Lisa: In terms of planning, I am a little bit boring. I have the same sort of things every day; I have a protein shake for breakfast, I will prepare all my lunch the night before and I’ll have some nuts ready in a little pot. I generally have either chicken or tuna or some sort of fish with avocado and greens for my lunch, berries, and a protein shake again before I leave work.

Josh: Awesome. It sounds like a nice day of food.

Lisa: Then dinner in the evening, which my other half cooks for me, generally, when I get back from the DVCC.

Josh: I like that - I think I might need some tips on that one too!

So Lisa, before we close, if there is anyone out there listening who may have been in the same position as you, they are finding that their work *life balance isn’t where they want it to be, they’re not happy with the way they look or how they feel - what advice would you give them, considering your experience?

Lisa: Just come and try it out and once you get into the routine and you get that routine sorted, you’re just set up then. Because I hate not being able to come and I hate being out of my routine now; I never thought I would never be a big drinker but I have actually stopped drinking. It’s a complete lifestyle change, but once you get going and you see the results, you’ll want to carry on, you’ll want it to continue.

Josh: Thank you very much; there are some pearls of wisdom from Lisa Huckle! So hopefully people out there listening have learnt something from that and will be able to apply it to themselves to help them on their journey. Thank you very much, this is Josh and Lisa from the DVCC, thank you for listening; bye.
