Is It Ever a Good Idea to Skip Meals?

Breakfast, Carbohydrates, Carbs, Healthy Eating

Don’t get me wrong. Skipping meals is definitely not a good practice to get into. It can lead to light-headedness, poor concentration, irritability and a host of other conditions. So it’s generally bad all round. But that said, when it comes to breakfast, on certain occasions, it may actually be a good idea. Let’s take a look.

There’s Nothing Healthy to Eat

Maybe you’re in a situation where you’re rushing to get to a meeting and stop off at a roadside café. Or you’re in a hotel (in Disneyland or something), or a friend’s house, and there is simply nothing healthy to eat.

Missing a meal, as a one-off, is not going to destroy you. Believe me.

Whereas starting out your day out chomping through a doughnut, pastry, or other food high in empty carbs and sugar is starting a dangerous cycle. Not only will you feel sluggish (and probably wracked with guilt) but you’ll start your day off the wrong way.

There’s nothing like sinning first thing in the morning to set you up for a cycle of unhealthy eating and bad choices.

Why Processed Foods Are So Bad

When you start your day off unhealthily by eating processed foods, you’re delivering your body a mega combo of high sugar and poor quality cabs. It’s like starting the day out by stubbing your toe on the bedside table or washing your hair with shaving cream instead of shampoo.

Once you do that, you just know the rest of the day is going to be a struggle. The absolute worst place to get your processed breakfast is McDonald’s. So don’t even think about it.

But I Need Breakfast in The Morning

Many times hunger is actually caused by dehydration. Just think about it. You don’t go for eight hours during the day without eating. So those eight hours or so of sleeping without ingesting any water are bound to leave you feeling thirsty.

Fill up instead on enough water to kill your thirst and a good litre or so to get your organs working well and blood flow going.

Black coffee is always a great way of staving off hunger and giving you the pick-me-up needed to function.

Eating a croissant or muffin, or any other poor quality carb food for breakfast will only temporarily stave off your hunger anyway. You’ll start feeling sleepy fairly soon after and need another meal to keep you going. At that point it’s far healthier to fill up on water, a little caffeine and move on.
