How to minimise the Damage from St Patrick’s Day!

Alcohol, Food, Drinks, DVCC Nutrition, DVCC Exercises

If you are going to be partaking in the St Paddy's Day celebrations, we hope you have an amazing time! BUT, if you are looking for a few tips to help minimise the damage from all of the festivities, try these quick tips.

1) Watch your calories!

The average pint of Guinness contains around 210 calories. When you are a few into the evening, it's easy to see how they can quickly stack up out of nowhere, leaving you in a massive calorie surplus for the day.

To reduce this, store some of your daily calories for later in the day. Instead of eating as you normally would, perhaps try to focus on eating less calorific foods such as cruciferous veg, eggs, and fish, so when you do start drinking, you’ll have some to spare instead of piling on thousands of extra calories!

2) Don’t go out hungry!

Whilst we'd recommend watching the foods that you do eat during the day, DON’T NOT EAT!

This is a big one and has been the downfall of many a night out for most of us, I’m sure…Believe it or not, the alcohol itself typically isn’t the biggest issue, it’s the food choices made caused because of the alcohol.

By having a hearty (low calorie) meal before you go out, you will be far less likely to indulge in all of those fast food options. Perhaps this time, give that 2AM kebab a miss (but if you do, make it a chicken shish)

Essentially, the less hungry you are, the less likely you are to overeat and over-drink!

3) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

This is another important one, but if you are looking to minimise the damage to your body (and head the next day!), pay some extra attention to your hydration whilst out.

A good rule of thumb to follow is to drink 1 pint of water for every pint of beer that you drink.

Now go out and celebrate to your heart’s content! Just keep these tips in mind and you’ll still be able to have a great night without feeling too guilty the next day!
