How To Feel Fresh Again… Detox From Christmas

Detox, Alcohol

We have all done it: eaten way to much food over Christmas and maybe slightly over indulged in having one to many alcoholic drinks. If your reading this and feel like you want to refresh yourself for the new year approaching then below are some tips to help you lose a little weight, put the breaks on the overindulgence train and get back into the routine you were in before the festive season began.

hot_lemon_water-300x225When you get up each morning make yourself a drink of warm water mixed with the juice from one lemon and avoid eating or drinking anything else for around 20 minutes.

This will help to alkalise the body and will act as a mild diuretic and will help your liver cleanse its self. Try to do this for 2 weeks. If the lemon upsets your stomach then reduce it to half a lemon. Raw apple cider vinegar would also be a good alternative. You can pick up apple cider vinegar at most local super markets.

Aim to eat plenty of lean meat and plenty of vegetables and where possible stick to good quality grass fed meat. Avoid any sugary substances for 2 whole weeks or more and ditch the alcohol. It’s important to try to let your blood sugar levels stabilise and give your hormones a chance to return to normal. There has been research, which shows eating sugar leads to craving more sugar, so you may crave sweet things for a few days after going back to a low carb diet, but these cravings will pass as long as you stay strong from the start.

If you are desperate to have something sugary opt for dark chocolate (70 percent coca solids minimum and higher if you enjoy it), 70 percent dark chocolate is low in sugar and rich in antioxidants. But surely you have had your fill of sugar? I know I have :)

Green-Leafy-Vegetables-in-DietEat at least 2-4 portions of green leafy vegetables everyday, they are low in calories, their GI (glycemic index) is low, they are rich in nutrients and you your body loves them.

After periods where your body may have taken on a lot of extra sugary foods your insulin sensitivity may have become slightly lower. This means that your body is less able to handle sugary foods and more likely to store any excess sugar that enters the body as fat. To make a good start on reversing the effects of too much sugar eat a higher percentage of your meals from natural fats such as: nuts, olive oil and avocados.

Taking a good quality fish oil will also help to reduce improve insulin sensitivity.

It’s very easy to get out of the habit of training and eating well over the festive period so try to get back into training as quickly as possible when the festive season has ended. You may have thoughts about delaying it a day or two, but this can easily turn into a week and before you know it a whole month has passed and you haven't resumed your normal
training schedule.

A good way to avoid this mistake is to book in a time when you know you will be available to train and commit to it. Planning ahead will make it easier for you to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the first training session after an absence from it.
