See Lucy's Weight Loss Story. On Her Own Words..

Weight loss, Body Fat

Nathan: Hi, this is Nathan from the DVCC, I’m here with Lucy and today I’m going to ask her a few questions and hopefully get an insight into how she has got such great results, and talk about any difficulties she may have had, because I am sure that there are literally thousands of people that will find this very, very useful. So Lucy, please introduce yourself and how long have you been at the DVCC?

Lucy_3Lucy: Hi, I’m Lucy and I have been with the DVCC for probably around one year and three months.

Nathan: And in that time, what kind of results have you achieved?

Lucy: I have completely transformed my body and the way that I think about food, the way that I exercise. I’ve *lost fat and I have built muscle.

Nathan: How much fat specifically have you *lost, Lucy?

Lucy: I think it’s up to about 45 lbs?

Nathan: Correct, 45 lbs; that is an absolutely awesome achievement! What were your struggles with weight *loss before DVCC; can you just talk about those for me?

Lucy: Probably the biggest struggle I had was doing fad diets; I would try anything that I thought would shift weight quickly, and I would leave myself tired and fatigued, with no energy. And then as soon as I came off the diet I would put the weight all back on again.

Nathan: What kind of diets were you trying at that point?

Lucy: I did shake diets; I did really, really strict weight *loss plans where I would eat about 500-600 calories a day, but with no sugar and all the things you are supposed to cut out but, you know… I was on a really low calorie intake and counting every calorie that I put in my mouth.

Nathan: So you tried various different ways – and what kind of time period was that over?

Lucy: I have probably struggled with my weight since I was in my early twenties, so say six or seven years; I have always struggled with my weight, apart from the last year.

Lucy_2Nathan: Apart from the last year, when you have made a huge change, which is awesome. So you’ve tried to *lose weight before; how did it go in terms of how long did you manage to keep that weight off for when you did manage to *lose weight, before the DVCC?

Lucy: I would probably spend a couple of months *losing it and *losing it really quickly, and then I would keep it off for maybe a month. And then I would slowly get back into the eating habit that I was in, and put it all back on. I never changed my frame of mind and I think that’s the most important thing.

Nathan: And is that something you learnt from the DVCC or is that just from some trial and error?

Lucy: No, it’s something I learnt here; I think now I’ve got a different relationship with food than I had before, and I just love training.

Nathan: And what kind of way is your relationship with food different to the way it was before, if you don’t mind me asking?

Lucy: In that I don’t always turn to it for comfort now; if I had a bad day I used to just go and eat; I don’t focus on it all the time now.

Nathan: Would you say that your knowledge of what constitutes a healthy diet has changed since joining up with the DVCC?

Lucy: Yes, completely, because I think before when I used to diet, dieting to me was starving yourself and fasting, whereas now it is not; it’s about nourishing yourself with the right foods and your body will use it properly.

Nathan: Awesome, I’m glad to hear that. So before, you were using just nutrition to try and *lose weight; did you ever try exercise before the DVCC?

Lucy: I did a couple of zumba classes – that was just jumping around for an hour, with no style or grace!

Nathan: And how long did you do zumba for?

Lucy: I probably did maybe 2 or 3 months I would say; I did maybe one class a week, thinking that was enough, and obviously it’s not. But I never really exercised before in the way that I have here.

Nathan: Never lifted a dumbbell before or a kettle bell?

Lucy: Not really, no.

Nathan: And how do you find that you enjoyed – you obviously enjoy what you do here; was it something that you always enjoyed doing from the very first session you had, or is it something that’s grown on you over time?

Lucy: I think the first week I was really surprised at how hard it was; but once I found my stride, then I just loved it – I loved the feeling of doing something one week that I couldn’t do the week before. I never feel like I’m a victim of being a female, which I’ve had experiences with in the past, in that, you know, “You can’t do that because you’re a girl, you can’t lift that because you’re a girl”. It has never been like that here; I’m judged on my ability and not on gender and that’s a really big thing for me.

Nathan: And you recently snatched a personal best of 22.5 kilogram fat *loss, which you’ve been trying for for a while, so that’s awesome, very well done to you. How does your lifestyle look now compared to before the DVCC?

Lucy: It’s completely different now, actually; I finish work and I come straight here, I don’t really think about anything else – it’s just part of my *life now. Saturday mornings, I wake up and come here and that’s just my *life now. I don’t ever think “Oh, I’ve got to go to the gym”, it’s never like that; I’m always pumped to come here.

Nathan: It’s almost like it’s a habit that you’ve instilled in yourself.

Lucy: Yes

Nathan: That’s awesome. And in what aspect has the DVCC helped you the most do you feel?

Lucy: I think probably educating me about the best way to eat right and stay healthy and the best way to exercise. I think a lot of people are misguided, to think that if you go for a run that’s the best way to keep in shape, and it’s great but it’s not, you know, it’s not for everybody and I found the thing that suits me the most is this.

Nathan: Were you running beforehand at all, before you started with the DVCC?

Lucy: No, I was doing - just trying different things but I didn’t really know how to – I was intimidated by a gym, I was intimidated by the people that went there, because I didn’t know how to use the equipment. But I kind of set myself a goal of being able to run 5k and I didn’t realise how much my fitness had increased from coming here until I actually started running and I thought “I can do this”, you know. So it’s changed my *life completely.

Nathan: Good, I’m super happy to hear that. Do you have any specific tips, with nutrition or exercise, that you could share with anyone listening and who is trying to *lose weight actively?

Lucy: I think with nutrition, the biggest tip I could give would be don’t put yourself in situations where temptation is going to be there, and always have a goal and a focus. I keep pictures of when I was bigger on my phone, and I have motivational things as my screensavers, so I’ve always got a focus. With the fitness side and the exercise, I would say just don’t give up; when it hurts don’t give up. And push yourself all the time.

Nathan: Yes, because you came into the session today and you were telling me how sore you were, and it wasn’t in a negative way at all; you enjoy that soreness now, right?

Lucy: I do, I love it! Because then I think I’ve worked for it. You’ve got to fight for these things; you know, when you are sore the next day and you see that you can do something you couldn’t do the week before, you know that’s because you fought for it.

Nathan: The soreness that Lucy was experiencing and talking to me today about was actually called a delayed onset muscle soreness, and it can happen after you have exercised at a high intensity. It’s a completely natural thing to experience and - as I say - Lucy, myself and a lot of other people actually enjoy the feeling of DOMS. Have you got any final words before we finish this conversation, Lucy?

Lucy: I would say if you’re thinking about joining or have considered it, and have looked into different things and tried different things, then just give it a go. The results speak for themselves; it feels like a family environment, I’m friends with everybody that comes here, I have never felt more encouraged. Just take a chance and do it, because you won’t regret it.

Nathan: Awesome, excellent – thank you very much Lucy, that’s very much appreciated. If you are listening to this, I hope you found this interview helpful – again I would like to thank you Lucy for your time.

This is Nathan from the DVCC at Milton Keynes; have a good day!
