Hooked on Spaghetti? Try This Nifty Replacement

If you come from a family of Italians, you’re probably used to gathering together for family dinner on a Sunday. Waiting anxiously as la Nonna serves up a steaming bowl of pasta with pesto sauce, your mouth waters as you wait for your plate.

Even if Italian’s not in your blood, who isn’t partial to a large bowl of Spagbol every now and again?

Problem is, when you’re trying to lose weight or stick to healthier eating habits, the excess of carb from a bowl of spaghetti isn’t really ideal. So what can you do instead?

Spiralizers

What’s a spiralizer when it’s at home? A nifty little kitchen gadget that allows you to take pretty much any vegetable and spiralize it. So you can take carrots, swede, squash, courgette, or the vegetable of your choice and turn it into pasta-like spirals.

OK, so you’re not fooling anyone here. The taste is different. But in a good way. It’s actually much tastier eating a wide variety of vegetables with your sauce than whole wheat pasta. And in terms of bulk, it still does the job, leaving you feeling full and satisfied afterwards.

What About Other Pastas?

If you’re partial to serving of carbonara, remember you don’t have to cut out everything you love completely.

We always recommend that you do your best to stave off cravings by eating a pile of steamy vegetables or tomato soup. But you can also have a reset meal once a week. If pasta’s your downfall, it’s not going to kill you to have a little of what you love.

If you do want to try to replace it or make this craving a little healthier, try to steer away from white pasta and mix it up instead with whole grain pasta or rice pasta.

And if you’re a fan of lasagne, try eating it with aubergine slices instead (like the Greek Moussaka). Or if you can, try replacing with Shirataki Noodles, Soba noodles, black bean spaghetti or broccoli slaw. Yum!
