Full Fat Food Versus Fat Free Food

Sugar, Weight loss, Body Fat, Trans Fats

Fat-freeWhenever I go to my local supermarket to pick up some vegetables, I find myself constantly having to  bite my lip and keep quiet when I see people picking items up and putting them into their basket with the words "low fat" or "fat free" written across them (usually in huge letters).

These products are designed to grab your attention.

These products will usually be on the middle shelf at eye level, so they are the first thing you see, and because they are "fat free specialist products", they cost you that little bit more because they are going to help you lose weight by having the fat removed from them. It is an easy mistake to make and it comes from very misleading marketing.

When you are trying to lose fat you actually want to keep your natural fat intake on the high side. Fats from whole foods and animal fat are good healthy fats.

When companies produce and process these low fat foods, they take the natural fats out of them and replace them with sugar. The fat in a lot of food is where the flavour is held, so to get that flavour back, there will be a long list of added ingredients which are not ideal for fat loss, not to mention your health.

eggs_and_bacon-630x310I have spoken to many DVCC clients before about removing fat from products and the best way I can explain it is this: If you were going to have an ideal breakfast for fat loss you could have bacon and eggs. You may or may not eat the fat off the bacon, but whether you eat the fat or not, the majority of people will cook their bacon with the fat on and then cut it away from the meat when it has been cooked.

If you were to cook bacon without the fat on it, it just wouldn't taste as good.

The truth is that sugar will help you to gain body fat, (natural) fats are not the enemy.

Trans-fat-sudden-deathTrans fats are what you really want to avoid. Trans fats are produced when unsaturated oils are hydrogenated or altered so they are solid at room temperature. They appear in high levels in prepared ready made meals and foods.

So, if you are on a mission to reduce your body fat levels, avoid the low fat options - and next time you read "low fat" on a product, you will now know that it is most likely to be "high sugar".
