Today we have a question from Suzanne : Should I be using a protein shake for fat loss?

protein-shake-recipes-choc-arseProtein helps to increase your muscle tone and increases the speed of recovery after a work out.

By consuming a higher amount of protein in your diet you will increase thermogenesis within your body.
This thermic effect is caused when your body digests protein. During the digestion of protein your core body temperature will rise slightly causing you to burn more calories as your body repairs its self after exercise.

Whey protein which is the most commonly used protein in protein shakes has the greatest thermic effect.

When you have finished a training session your body needs protein to repair the damage done to your muscle fibres. A good quality low carb and low sugar protein shake gives you a quick protein hit to digest which will help you to improve your chances of burning body fat and increasing your muscle tone.

The best time to use a protein shake is directly after training. They can also be used through out the day to keep protein intake high. However you shouldn't ever replace a meal with a protein shake. Remember the key is in the word supplement, its something that should be added to your nutrition not as a replacement for something else.

The second questions of the day is from Mike : How much water should I drink on a day to day basis.

increase-water-intake-to-treat-anemiaWater is a very important part of health, losing fat and building muscle tone. Our muscles are made of 75% water so it is important to keep water consumption up.

When your body is properly hydrated it will be more likely to use fat as energy rather than sugar. There has also been significant studies which show that people often mistake being de-hydrated for being hungry and then eat a larger amount of calories throughout the day.

A male should aim to drink 3 litres of water each day and a female should aim for 2 litres per day.
Try to take regular sips of water every 20-30 minutes. Drinking 3 litres of water at 10am will not hydrate you as your body cannot process it properly, it needs a consistent supply of water.

Try to get all your water in before 5 or 6 in the evening as if you are still drinking late in the evening chances are you will need to go to the bathroom during the night, and its important to get a high quality of unbroken sleep for fat loss also.

If you don't drink enough at the moment start by increasing your water intake bit by bit and try to be mindful of how much your drinking on a day to day basis.

If you have a questions please leave it in the comment section below and we will answer it in the future.

Until next time, this is Nathan at DVCC
