Today we have a question from Jasper..

Jasper asked: Should I use pre workout before training?

Great questions Jasper, thanks for asking.

Pre-work out for anyone one who has never come across it before is a supplement designed to increase your training performance.

supps.jpgThey usually come in small tubs with brightly coloured writing on them to draw your attention. Most pre workouts are caffeine based, but also contain Branch Chain Amino Acids otherwise known as BCAA's, beta-alanine and creatine.

Caffines primary purpose is to provide energy and has been shown to have good effects on endurance exercise and short bouts of mammal exercise.

BCAA's purpose is to maintain a Anabolic environment within the body during training. Being in an anabolic state means a state of building muscle and repairing tissue, rather than catabolic which is the destruction of tissue and muscle fibre.

Beta-alanine increases muscular endurance and creatine will help with explosive strength.

Pre work out is a great supplement for those who are trying to build power and strength. The reason for this is that strength training requires minimal reps and long rest periods.

However for any type of endurance training or high intensity training where you will really be rasing your heart rate, you want to avoid pre work out.

This is because many pre workouts increase bloop pressure and heart rate. This can become very dangerous for anyone who is training at high intensities with low rest and if large quantities are taken under the wrong training circumstances it can cause serious problems which could lead to death.

Pre workouts are generally safe if you are to use the correctly, which would be for strength training and only at the recommended amounts.

However if you're training in MLT sessions or anything else which is high intensity I would stick with a black americano or espresso before training.

This is Nathan from the DVCC. Have a great day.
