Today we have a question from Vanessa..

Vanessa asks: How can I improve my posture?

Great question Vanessa thanks for asking.

One of the main things to do if you are not already doing so is to incorporate stretching into your daily routine. Over time training or even just through day to day life, some muscles will become tighter and others weaker.

In some cases this process results in your posture moving out of its natural line. Stretching consistently will allow the tighter muscles to relax and therefore allow your posture to come back to a more natural position. It will also increase blood flow to the targeted muscles which will allow for release of tension and stress.

Try to think about what muscles you use constantly, think about things which you do outside of the gym as well. For example if you type on a computer for long periods, its likely that your pecs will shorten and become tight and your lats and traps will become weaker. This can cause your shoulders to move out of position.

We would advise that if you do spend a lot of time at a computer to stretch your chest, shoulders and lats before bed and in the morning everyday.

Sitting down whether its driving or again at a desk will cause your hips to become tight. When you sit down your glutes elongate and hip flexers shorten.

This is one of the main reasons why people suffer from back pain. The gluteus play a vital role in the support of your lower back and should the become lengthened and weak, you back and hamstrings will take the load.

Stretch your hip flexors and stregthen your gluteus if you spend a long time sitting down at work or at home. Strengthening your gluteus can be done throughout body weight or weight squats and glute bridges.

When your stretching aim for 30 seconds for each stretch. Hold the stretch for 15 seconds, take a deep breath and then as you exhale increase the stretch if possible to increase your flexibility.

This is Nathan from the DVCC. Have a great day.
