Hi, I’m Lewis from the DVCC. Welcome to the weekly DVCC TV show, where we can inform you on things that are happening at the centre, update you with some amazing results that our clients are achieving and answer questions about health, fitness and nutrition for losing fat and building muscle tone.

Today we have a question from Lucinda: “Will running help me lose weight?”

keep-up-running-lake-28072011Certain types of running can be very good for losing body fat; however, long distance running isn’t the best in terms of improving your body composition. If you look at the body of a sprinter compared to a marathon runner, the sprinter tends to be fairly lean and have a good physique, whereas a marathon runner tends to have quite low muscle.

Long distance running is also bad for your joints, due to the constant impact on your knees and your hips. Long distance running also elevates your cortisol levels, which has an inverse relationship with your testosterone. With your cortisol levels elevated, your hormones won’t work ultimately, in terms of losing body fat.

caucausian_woman_running_sprint_train_exerciseHowever, if you do sprints, there is a much higher likelihood of losing body fat at a faster rate and raising your metabolism. For example, a tabata kind of setting: so 20 seconds of work, 10 seconds rest; or 100 metre sprint and walk to recover 10 times, are a fantastic way to lose body fat.
