Today we have a question from Matthew.

Matthew asked: “How can I reduce muscle soreness after exercise?”

Great question, Matthew.

muscleWhen you train, you do damage to your muscle fibres.

This damage is considered good damage and is what helps you burn fat and build muscle tone.

While your body repairs the damage done from training it causes an elevation in calorific expenditure, meaning that you burn more calories for up to 48 hours post workout.

Occasionally, and normally following a change in routine or a particularly hard session, you may experience some muscle soreness - this is called delayed onset muscle soreness - or DOMS for short.

There are a couple of ways in which you can reduce your DOMS after a hard session. The first is by training more often.

The idea of training your legs while they are very sore might not sound like a good one, but increased blood flow to the muscles will help to ease the pain of DOMS.

on_bcaa_5000_-_336gUsing BCAA - otherwise known as branch chain amino acids - after training will help you to recover faster and reduce the likelihood of DOMS.

Blueberries have been shown to have a great effect on easing muscle soreness. Blueberries have anti inflammatory compounds in them which will help to remove the waste products created from intense training sessions.

If you have some serious DOMS but still want to train, drink a cup of black coffee before training. Not only will it improve your energy and stimulate your metabolism, there is also evidence which points to caffeine blocking the central nervous receptors related to pain.
